Richie Havens was an American singer, songwriter and guitarist whose work moved between folk, soul and rhythm and blues. Known for his rhythmic guitar style, often using open tunings, he rose to prominence in the 1960s with albums such as Mixed Bag and Something Else Again, which established his presence on the Greenwich Village folk scene. His opening performance at the Woodstock festival in 1969 became a landmark of his career: by extending his set and improvising on the spiritual "Motherless Child," he reached a worldwide audience and acquired iconic status within the countercultural movement. Over the following decades he maintained an intense career as a live performer, released records, appeared at international festivals and worked in television and advertising. Havens also appeared in films and theatrical productions, collaborated with contemporary artists and took part in public events related to Indigenous rights and pacifist causes. In the 2000s he continued to release material and make special appearances until he withdrew from the stage for health reasons. His career is remembered for his vocal impact and for the rendition of “Freedom” that remains linked to the memory of Woodstock.
