Rick Douglas Husband was an American fighter pilot and astronaut who served as an officer in the United States Air Force before being selected for the U.S. space program. He earned a degree in mechanical engineering and a master's and worked as a test pilot at bases such as Edwards and Boscombe Down, accumulating more than 3,800 flight hours in over 40 types of aircraft and taking part in significant F‑15 projects and engine evaluation programs. Selected as an astronaut candidate in 1994, he worked at the Johnson Space Center on advanced programs, Astronaut Office safety, and studies aimed at upgrades to the Space Shuttle and reentry vehicles. He flew twice: as pilot of STS‑96, which made the first rendezvous and docking with the International Space Station and delivered supplies for permanent occupancy, and as commander of STS‑107, a mission devoted to microgravity research. Husband and the entire STS‑107 crew died when Columbia broke apart during reentry in 2003. He received posthumous honors, including the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, and several sites and programs were named after him, reflecting his contributions to flight testing and space exploration.
