Robert von Ranke Graves was a multifaceted British writer—poet, novelist, critic, and translator—whose work combined classical learning with personal experience. He became known both for his postwar poetry and for historical novels that reconstructed ancient figures and myths in an accessible narrative style. His memoir Goodbye to All That (1929) cemented his public reputation by recounting the traumatic experience of the First World War, in which he was wounded at the Battle of the Somme.

In the 1930s Graves produced his best-known historical novels, including I, Claudius and Claudius the God, award-winning works that brought him critical and popular recognition; I, Claudius was adapted for television in 1976. He also wrote on mythology—The Greek Myths remains a reference—and maintained a steady output of fiction and essays throughout the twentieth century.

He settled in Deià, Majorca, where he lived for nearly half a century and where he died in 1985; his house now serves as a local museum. Graves’s legacy lies both in the renewal of the historical novel and in the influence of his memoirs and mythological studies on readers and scholars of modern literature.
