Robert Peel was a British Conservative statesman who served as Prime Minister on two occasions (1834–1835; 1841–1846) and left a lasting mark on nineteenth‑century British institutions. The son of a wealthy textile industrialist, he was the first prime minister to come from industry, graduated with distinction from Christ Church, Oxford, and was known for combining technical expertise with political skill.

As Home Secretary, he promoted reform of the criminal law and created the Metropolitan Police, the force that gave rise to the terms "bobbies" and "peelers" and established Peel as the father of the modern British police. His pragmatic approach produced several political reversals: initially conservative on issues such as religious privileges, he ultimately supported Catholic emancipation and other liberal measures.

The Tamworth Manifesto (1834) crystallized principles that would shape the modern Conservative Party, while his second ministry advanced economic and social reforms — including laws on mines, factories, railway transport, and the introduction of an income tax to offset tariff reductions.

His decision to support the repeal of the Corn Laws during the Great Famine in Ireland precipitated his fall as prime minister, but secured his legacy as a pragmatic reformer and a central figure in the transition from Toryism to modern conservatism.
