Robert Stone was an American novelist and screenwriter whose work became known for its unsparing depiction of the counterculture, war, and the drug trade from the 1960s through the 1990s. He rose to wide recognition with Dog Soldiers (1974), a novel shaped by his Vietnam experience that won the National Book Award in 1975 and secured his reputation among the leading American novelists of the time. His career included time as a seaman, war correspondent, and journalist, experiences that fed recurring themes in his books: the moral collapse of the United States, international conflicts, and disillusioned characters. Other notable novels include A Hall of Mirrors (1967), A Flag for Sunrise (1981)—set in Nicaragua and a Pulitzer finalist—and Outerbridge Reach (1992). He also published short stories and essays on the craft of the political novel. As a screenwriter, he adapted part of his work for film; the Dog Soldiers adaptation, Who’ll Stop the Rain (1978), screened at Cannes and earned Stone a Writers Guild of America nomination. His legacy lies in realist, critical literature that blends journalistic research and personal experience to examine the contradictions of power and the American experience.
