Robert Franklin Stroud (1890–1963), known as the “Birdman of Alcatraz,” was an American criminal convicted of homicide whose long prison life and intellectual activity made him a notorious figure in popular culture. Initially sentenced for killing a man at age 19, Stroud received a further conviction after killing a prison guard in 1916; his death sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment.
During many years of federal incarceration, particularly at the Leavenworth Penitentiary, Stroud pursued amateur ornithology: he bred, studied, and at times sold birds, earning respect from some specialists and collectors. When transferred in 1942 to Alcatraz, a maximum-security island prison, he was forbidden to sell birds, but his reputation as a scholar had already been established.
Stroud never regained his freedom and served his sentence until his death in 1963. His story reached cinema and literature; the film Birdman of Alcatraz (1962), starring Burt Lancaster, helped spread his public image and stimulated debate about crime, confinement, and the possibility of intellectual reinvention within the prison system.
