Roberta Cleopatra Flack was an American singer and pianist whose smooth voice and emotive interpretation helped shape popular music in the 1970s. Known for blending R&B, jazz, folk and pop, she became a central figure in the development of the radio format known as quiet storm. Her repertoire included notable interpretations of songwriters such as Leonard Cohen and pieces by the Beatles, as well as chart-topping hits.
She achieved major commercial success with singles such as “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” “Killing Me Softly with His Song,” and “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” and was the first artist to win the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in consecutive years. Her collaboration with Donny Hathaway produced celebrated duets, including “Where Is the Love” and “The Closer I Get to You,” establishing her among the defining voices of her generation.
A music graduate of Howard University, Flack began her career as a teacher before moving to nightclub stages and recording her debut album First Take (1969). Over decades she remained relevant through later partnerships and duets, received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020, and left a legacy defined by interpretive elegance and an ability to cross genres.
