Roger Penrose is an English mathematical physicist and philosopher of science, widely recognized for his contributions to general relativity, cosmology, and mathematics. Emeritus holder of the Rouse Ball Chair of Mathematics at the University of Oxford, Penrose became known in 1965 for showing that singularities—such as black holes—can arise from the gravitational collapse of massive stars, a result that solidified the theoretical understanding of these objects.

Over the course of his career he developed concepts that shaped mathematical physics: twistor theory, the cosmic censorship conjecture, and important singularity theorems (in collaboration with Stephen Hawking). He also created recreational mathematical objects—such as the Penrose triangle—that influenced artists and visual culture.

His work includes the independent formulation of the generalized inverse (the Moore–Penrose matrix) and an extensive body of writing on the philosophy of mind and science, with publications aimed both at specialists and general readers. In 2020 he received the Nobel Prize in Physics for the robust theoretical prediction of black hole formation, recognition of his lasting impact on modern physics.
