Roger Peyrefitte was a French writer and diplomat whose work and public conduct provoked controversy and notoriety throughout the twentieth century. Trained in political science, he began his career in the diplomatic service in Athens in the 1930s, an experience that later informed novels in which he depicted the backstage and secrets of diplomacy. His public service was interrupted during the Second World War; he returned briefly and then withdrew permanently.
As an author, Peyrefitte achieved wide recognition with Les Amitiés particulières (1944), an autobiographical novel about experiences in boarding schools that earned him the Prix Renaudot and was later adapted for film. Over decades he produced an extensive body of work — novels, essays and translations — often focused on subjects that were taboo at the time, in particular his open defense of homosexual relationships and his criticism of the Catholic Church.
Peyrefitte’s combative stance toward the Holy See and figures such as Pope Pius XII provoked public debate and clashes with intellectuals of his generation. His work was sometimes criticized for prioritizing commercial success, but it also brought him popular recognition and left a conflicted legacy: an author who helped increase the visibility of homosexual themes and remained a controversial figure in the French literary scene.
