Romano Prodi is a prominent Italian economist and politician active in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. He served as President of the European Commission from 1999 to 2004, during which the euro was introduced into circulation on 1 January 2002. Domestically, he led centre‑left coalitions and served two terms as Prime Minister of Italy: first in 1996, heading the Olive coalition, and again in 2006 after a narrow victory over Silvio Berlusconi.
Trained in law, he pursued an academic career at institutions including the Catholic University of Milan, the University of Bologna and the London School of Economics, and held visiting posts at Harvard and Stanford. In the Italian public sector he headed the Istituto per la Ricostruzione Industriale, directing financial restructuring programs that became a hallmark of his economic work.
His political career includes a central role in reshaping Italy’s centre‑left and helping to found coalitions that brought together moderate and leftist parties. Known for prioritizing fiscal adjustment and economic rehabilitation, Prodi’s legacy is associated with European integration and managing the transition to the single currency.
