Ross McWhirter was a British journalist who, together with his twin brother Norris, co-founded the reference book of records that became known worldwide. Trained in sports journalism, the brothers set up a data agency for the press and, drawing on that expertise, published in 1955 the volume that quickly became a UK bestseller. Both became frequent television personalities, answering viewers’ questions with encyclopedic memory for facts and record achievements. McWhirter was also active in conservative politics and took part in public initiatives against what he regarded as threats to security; he even offered a reward for information leading to the capture of those responsible for a series of bombings. His right‑wing positions included advocating harsh penalties for acts of terrorism and proposing restrictions on Irish immigrants in the United Kingdom. In 1975 he was assassinated by members of the Provisional Irish Republican Army, a crime that provoked widespread shock and had political repercussions. His public legacy remains tied to the creation and dissemination of popular records and statistics, and to the cultural influence of the publishing project he helped found.
