Roy Eldridge, known as “Little Jazz,” was an American trumpeter whose career marked the transition from swing to bebop. Renowned for his virtuosic technique, sophisticated use of harmony (including tritone substitutions) and intensely passionate solos, Eldridge influenced key figures such as Dizzy Gillespie and was regarded as the modern exemplar of the hot trumpet that followed Louis Armstrong. Active from the 1930s, he played in major territory orchestras and in prominent bands such as Fletcher Henderson’s; he recorded with Billie Holiday and gained fame for notable solos, including on “Rockin’ Chair.” His career included leading his own groups, dance-hall residencies and radio debuts that broadened his popular reach. Eldridge also confronted and responded to institutional racism in the music world: at one point he interrupted his musical career to study radio engineering and he was among the first Black musicians to join a major white band on a permanent basis—the Gene Krupa orchestra—helping to elevate the band’s jazz credentials. Roy Eldridge’s legacy lies in the bridge he built between jazz styles, the technical influence he passed on to subsequent trumpeters, and the central place he claimed as a swing figure and precursor of bebop.
