Rudolf Bultmann was a German Lutheran theologian and New Testament professor whose work shaped twentieth-century biblical studies. As a leading figure in form criticism and dialectical hermeneutics, he focused on analyzing Gospel traditions and proposed methods to distinguish literary forms and editorial adaptations to help reconstruct the history of the Christian tradition. Bultmann became best known for his proposal of demythologization: interpreting the New Testament’s mythical elements existentially, emphasizing the kerygma (the proclamation) rather than factual details about Jesus’ life. For him what was proclaimed — that Jesus existed, preached, and died — mattered more than reconstructing every event in minute historical detail. Active in Marburg as a professor and mentor to generations of scholars, he influenced important students and interlocutors and engaged with contemporary philosophical currents, especially existentialism. His public stance included resistance to Nazi interference in universities and the church, and his work continues to provoke debate about method, faith, and historicity in biblical studies.
