Rupert Brooke

Rupert Brooke was an English poet whose brief career and early death in the First World War made him an emblem of the era’s martial idealism. He became best known for his war sonnets, especially “The Soldier,” included in the posthumously published collection 1914 and Other Poems, which achieved wide popularity in the year of its release. His poetry, marked by an idealistic and patriotic tone, resonated with readers and critics, earning numerous reprints and securing his literary reputation.

Active in influential literary circles, Brooke was connected to the Bloomsbury group and associated with the Georgian Poets and the Dymock community, forming ties with figures such as Edward Thomas and Robert Frost. At Cambridge he held a scholarship at King’s College and wrote essays and travel journals, in addition to contributing to newspapers before enlisting.

His personal life and appearance attracted as much attention as his work: complicated romantic relationships, bisexual inclinations, and the admiration of contemporaries helped shape his public image. He enlisted in 1914 and died in 1915 of septicaemia aboard a hospital ship while en route to land at Gallipoli, leaving a literary legacy that continued to shape cultural perceptions of the war.
