Rupert Sheldrake is an English biologist and author known for promoting heterodox ideas about biology and consciousness. Trained in biology and biochemistry at Cambridge, with time at Harvard and research institutes such as ICRISAT in India, he initially worked on plant physiology and the transport of auxins. He later left conventional research to concentrate on writing and on investigations of paranormal phenomena. His best-known work, A New Science of Life (1981), presents the hypothesis of morphic resonance, which proposes a collective memory in nature and telepathy-like interconnections between organisms. The proposal seeks to explain development, inheritance and behavior as an alternative to established biology, with broad and controversial implications. The scientific community has largely rejected morphic resonance, citing lack of evidence, inconsistencies with genetics and neuroscience, and methodological problems in related experiments. Despite the criticisms, Sheldrake has maintained a public presence through books, debates and interdisciplinary collaborations, influencing currents of New Age thought and discussions about the limits of the scientific method.
