Salvatore Quasimodo was an Italian poet central to the hermetic movement and the winner of the 1959 Nobel Prize in Literature. His work combines a strong classical impulse—shaped by studies in Greek and Latin—with a sensibility formed by the ruptures and tragedies of the twentieth century, such as the great 1908 earthquake that marked his childhood. Active in literary circles in Rome, Florence, and Milan, Quasimodo kept close ties with writers, editors, and painters and contributed to influential magazines such as Solaria. In the 1930s and 1940s he established himself as a poet and, in the decades that followed, also worked as a translator of classical and modern authors, bringing into Italian texts by Shakespeare and Pablo Neruda. His output is extensive and includes celebrated volumes such as Erato e Apòllìon (1936), Ed è subito sera (1942), and La terra impareggiabile (1958), as well as translations and anthologies that helped spread European literary traditions in contemporary Italy. Quasimodo’s legacy remains a touchstone for postwar Italian poetry, recognised both for its formal quality and for its historical and human commitment.
