Sandy West, born Sandra Sue Pesavento, was an American drummer, singer and songwriter recognized for her pioneering role in rock. As one of the founders of The Runaways, an all-female band formed in the 1970s, she helped break gender barriers in the genre and earned acclaim for her powerful technique and energetic style on the instrument. The Runaways gained international exposure through tours and recordings, especially in Japan, and became an influence for later generations of women musicians. Despite their artistic impact, the band's commercial success did not bring financial security for its members; after the group ended in 1979, Sandy attempted a solo career and took part in other projects, including the album The Beat Is Back and the Sandy West Band. In subsequent years she worked outside the music industry and appeared in the documentary Edgeplay, which revisited The Runaways' story. Diagnosed with lung cancer in 2005, Sandy died in 2006. She is remembered for the influence she had on drummers and for advancing the presence of women in rock, cited by peers and the press as a pioneering drummer.
