Sarah Jane Brady was a prominent American gun-control activist known for leading the public and political mobilization that produced regulatory measures in the United States. Married to James Brady — White House Press Secretary under President Ronald Reagan who was permanently wounded in the assassination attempt on the president — Sarah became a leading voice in the campaign that gave rise to what is now the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, serving in leadership roles on its board and executive team for decades, including as president beginning in 2000. Before becoming a public figure in the gun-control movement, she worked within partisan political circles: she held administrative and coordination roles for the Republican National Committee and served as an aide to members of Congress. That institutional experience and her direct involvement after her husband’s injury established her reputation as a lobbyist and public educator on gun safety and legislation. Author of A Good Fight (2002), a book that combines personal memoir and an account of the struggle to pass the Brady Bill, Sarah Brady received public-service awards and recognition for her influence on policies to prevent gun violence. She died in 2015, leaving a lasting impact on efforts to reform gun ownership and control in the United States.
