Sasha Velour, the stage name of Alexander Hedges Steinberg, is a performance artist, drag queen, illustrator and theater and television producer based in Brooklyn. Trained in Modern Literatures and holding an MFA in cartooning, she began her career as a graphic designer and comics author, publishing work on queer culture and retellings of historical episodes, such as the Stonewall riots. Winning the ninth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race raised her profile, particularly for the final performance that received wide critical acclaim. From there she expanded her platform with the monthly showcase NightGowns — a stage show that became a documentary series — and with the production company The House of Velour, through which she has promoted tours, exhibitions and collaborations in the contemporary cultural scene. Velour has also worked as a curator and organizer of projects that connect fashion, art and activism: in 2018 she directed Opening Ceremony’s show at New York Fashion Week with an entirely queer cast. Her work combines visual practice (exhibitions, illustrations and paper cutouts) with performances that engage LGBT+ history, establishing her as an influential figure in drag culture and contemporary performing arts.
