Scott Nearing was an American economist, educator, writer, and political activist known for his radical views and advocacy of a simple way of life. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, he made his mark as a professor and author of works critical of the prevailing economic system, arguing for a more democratic economy and attacking the concentration of wealth. His activism and public criticism of economic power made him a controversial figure: in 1915 he was dismissed from the Wharton School, an episode that cast him as a symbol of tensions between academia and conservative interests. During the First World War, his opposition to U.S. entry into the conflict and his antimilitarist activism brought him under investigation, although he was acquitted of the charges brought against him. In the interwar years he drew closer to the socialist movement and later to the Communist Party, maintaining an intellectual and public role focused on social reform. From the Great Depression onward, Nearing and his wife adopted a self-sufficient lifestyle, which they popularized in the book Living the Good Life (1954). His legacy combines economic critique, peace activism, and practical experimentation with alternatives to industrial consumerism.
