Severino Antinori is an Italian gynecologist and embryologist, known for his work in assisted reproduction and for controversial public positions on in vitro fertilization and human cloning. He graduated in medicine from the Sapienza University of Rome, shifted from gastroenterology to human reproduction beginning in 1978, and opened his own clinic in Rome in 1982. He was an early introducer of the ICSI technique in Italy and expanded fertility treatments to postmenopausal women, taking part in cases that drew large public attention because they involved older gestational carriers.
Beyond his clinical work, Antinori has proposed and promoted controversial ideas about human cloning since the late 1990s, in collaboration with other researchers. He announced alleged successes that were met with skepticism by the scientific community, which cited a lack of evidence and unresolved technical and ethological problems.
His career has also been marked by legal controversies: in 2016 he was detained on suspicion of improper removal of eggs from a patient. Given the presence of conflicting claims and judicial matters, caution is advised when presenting unverified facts about his research and results.
