Shirley June Fry Irvin was an American tennis player who rose to prominence in the 1940s and 1950s. Beginning her career in adolescence, she won all four Grand Slam singles titles and claimed 13 doubles titles, becoming one of the few players to win the major tournaments in both singles and doubles. In 1956 she was ranked world No. 1 and led the United States national rankings that year. Fry delivered notable performances at Wimbledon and the U.S. championships, including decisive victories over rivals such as Althea Gibson in the late stages of 1956, and played a key role in the Wightman Cup, where she maintained a positive record that helped secure several American wins. Her technique and consistency brought her eight Grand Slam singles finals, four of them titles. After a brief retirement and a comeback in 1956, she ended her professional career in 1957 upon marrying. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1970 in recognition of her contributions to women’s tennis, and is remembered as one of the great champions of the amateur era, whose versatility in singles and doubles left a mark on the sport.
