Sneaky Pete Kleinow was an American musician and animator recognized as a pioneer of the pedal steel guitar in rock and country-rock. He rose to prominence as a member of the Flying Burrito Brothers, an influential band in the country-rock movement of the late 1960s and 1970s, and as a sought-after studio musician who played on recordings by artists such as Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, John Lennon, Stevie Wonder and many others. His singular approach—using unconventional tunings and electronic effects such as fuzzbox, Leslie and Echoplex—helped redefine the role of the pedal steel outside the traditionally country realm.
Beyond his music career, Kleinow worked for decades as an animator and visual effects artist, collaborating on series and films and winning an Emmy for special effects on the miniseries The Winds of War. He also composed the Gumby theme and contributed to notable stop-motion and effects projects across several decades.
Recognized for his technical innovation and influence on later generations of players, Kleinow is a member of the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame. His legacy combines decisive contributions to landmark recordings and to the sonic evolution of the pedal steel in popular music.
