Sonny Rollins, born Theodore Walter Rollins, is one of the most influential tenor saxophonists of modern jazz. He began his musical life in childhood and established himself while still young by playing with figures such as Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis and the Clifford Brown–Max Roach quintet. His discography as a leader includes genre landmarks, notably Saxophone Colossus (1956), featuring the hit "St. Thomas", and innovative recordings such as Way Out West and A Night at the Village Vanguard (1957), which helped popularize the piano-less duo and trio format known as "strolling".

Rollins also distinguished himself as a composer: several of his tunes — including "St. Thomas", "Doxy", "Oleo" and "Airegin" — became standards in the jazz repertoire. In 1958 he wrote The Freedom Suite, an explicitly sociopolitical piece that reflects his awareness of the condition of Black people in the United States. In the decades that followed he experimented with Latin rhythms, approaches linked to the avant-garde and influences from R&B, pop and funk, while maintaining a creative, continually reinventing approach.

Beyond his technique and inventive improvisation, Rollins is remembered for singular practice habits — such as taking periods away for intensive study and training — and for a durable legacy that influenced generations of jazz instrumentalists.
