John Davison Rockefeller was an American business magnate and philanthropist. He is widely known as the richest American of all time and the richest person in modern history.
Rockefeller revolutionized the oil industry. In 1870, he founded the Standard Oil Company and ran it aggressively until his official retirement in 1897.
Standard Oil began as a partnership in Ohio between John and his brother, William Rockefeller, Henry Flagler, Jabez Bostwick, the chemist Samuel Andrews and Stephen V. Harkness. As the importance of kerosene and gasoline rose, Rockefeller's wealth grew and he became the richest man in the world and the first American to have more than one billion dollars.
If the comparison is made relative to the American GDP of 1937, valued at US$78 billion, Rockefeller is considered the richest man in history, having accumulated a fortune of approximately 1.96% of the American GDP, about US$418 billion adjusted to 2019.
