Stanley Baldwin, 1st Earl Baldwin of Bewdley, was a British Conservative politician who served three times as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. A history graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge, he first made his name in industry, modernizing his family’s iron-manufacturing business and holding corporate leadership posts before entering politics as Member of Parliament for Bewdley in 1906. In government he held key offices: President of the Board of Trade, Chancellor of the Exchequer and ultimately leader of the Conservative Party. He led administrations in the 1920s and 1930s, dealing with the major issues of the day such as unemployment, debates over protective tariffs, the 1926 general strike and the reorganization of the electricity supply industry that produced the Central Electricity Board in 1926. During the 1930s he participated in the National Government and promoted a limited rearmament programme and the reorganization of the Royal Air Force, and presided over the passage of the Government of India Act (1935). His tenure was also marked by sensitive political episodes, notably the Abdication crisis of Edward VIII. He later attracted criticism for his foreign-policy approach in the period before the Second World War. Legacy: a central figure of British Conservatism between the wars, Baldwin is remembered for a conciliatory leadership style in turbulent times and for controversies over Britain’s preparedness in the face of European threats.
