Stéphane Grappelli was a French jazz violinist whose career spanned much of the twentieth century, making him one of the most recognized figures in European jazz. Trained at the Conservatoire de Paris, he began playing in the streets and cinemas of Paris, developing a lyrical, fluid style that brought the violin to the forefront in jazz.
In 1934 he founded, with Django Reinhardt, the Quintette du Hot Club de France, one of the first all-string jazz groups and a landmark of gypsy jazz. The quintet influenced generations by exploring string arrangements with swing and improvisation, cementing Grappelli’s international reputation.
During and after World War II he remained highly active as a studio and stage musician, collaborating with artists such as George Shearing, Oscar Peterson, Yehudi Menuhin and Baden Powell, among others. Those partnerships demonstrated his versatility and his ability to move between musical traditions.
His legacy endures in the popularization of the violin in jazz and his influence on later violinists; his recordings and collaborations extended his reach beyond the jazz circuit, keeping his work present in repertoires and reissues.
