Stephen Jay Gould was an American paleontologist, evolutionary biologist, and historian of science, widely known as one of the most influential science communicators of his generation. He spent much of his career as a professor at Harvard and was a research associate at the American Museum of Natural History; he also taught at New York University as the Vincent Astor Visiting Research Professor. His most notable theoretical contribution, developed with Niles Eldredge in 1972, was the theory of punctuated equilibrium, which proposes long periods of evolutionary stability interrupted by relatively rapid episodes of speciation—an alternative to phyletic gradualism. Much of his empirical research focused on land-snail genera such as Poecilozonites and Cerion, and he influenced evolutionary developmental biology with the book Ontogeny and Phylogeny. Gould also opposed orthodox forms of selectionism and resisted reductionist applications of sociobiology to human behavior. He spoke out against creationism and advocated the idea of “nonoverlapping magisteria” between science and religion. To the general public he became known for roughly 300 essays in Natural History magazine and for numerous books that combined scientific rigor with accessible prose. His public engagement included involvement in social causes and criticism of pseudoscience tied to racism; he received significant cultural recognition, being named a “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress in 2000. He died in 2002, leaving a lasting legacy in evolutionary theory and science communication.
