Steve Paxton was an American experimental dancer and choreographer whose work reconfigured the notion of movement in contemporary dance. Trained initially in gymnastics and refined by studies with Merce Cunningham and José Limón, Paxton was a founding member of Judson Dance Theatre and the experimental ensemble Grand Union, key settings for New York’s performance avant-garde in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1972 he named and developed Contact Improvisation, a practice based on physical laws — friction, momentum, gravity, and inertia — that turns the tactile dialogue and weight exchange between bodies into a choreographic vocabulary. Paxton argued that non-specialists could also contribute to this language, incorporating elements from martial arts, social dance, sports, and children’s play. His work also treated everyday life as choreographic material: simple actions such as walking, sitting, or eating were systematized into scores and collective pieces, dissolving boundaries between audience and performer. Recognized internationally, he received awards such as the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement (Venice Biennale, 2014) and multiple Bessies, as well as major grants that affirmed his lasting influence on improvisation and somatic thinking in contemporary dance.
