Stuart Maxwell Whitman was an American actor whose film and television career spanned five decades, with more than two hundred credits between 1951 and 2000. Signed to 20th Century Fox, he first drew attention in supporting roles in films such as When Worlds Collide, Brigadoon and The Sound and the Fury, before taking leading parts in films like Murder, Inc. and The Mark — the latter earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for a controversial role other performers had declined. In cinema he worked across genres, from the aerial epic Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines to the western The Comancheros, appearing alongside stars such as John Wayne. His filmography also includes titles like The Longest Day, Rio Conchos, Night of the Lepus and Shatter, demonstrating versatility and a steady presence in commercial and studio productions. On television he is best remembered for starring in the series Cimarron Strip (1967), in which he played the hero Jim Crown in 90‑minute episodes, and for recurring roles on various series, including a portrayal of Jonathan Kent in the production Superboy. Trained in dramatic arts after serving in the Army Corps of Engineers, Whitman left a reputation for professionalism and artistic resilience until his death in 2020.
