Sylvester, stage name of Sylvester James Jr., was an American singer whose career was rooted in the disco and dance-music scenes of the 1970s and 1980s. He became known for hits such as "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" and "Dance (Disco Heat)", songs that lit up dancefloors and topped the club charts, cementing his place in the disco era. Although his natural range was baritone, he was remarkable for his command of falsetto, a technique that helped define the sound of his principal recordings. His theatrical stagecraft, often presented in drag, earned him the nickname "Queen of Disco" and put him at the forefront of a vibrant, assertive musical scene. Openly gay, Sylvester confronted the stigma of his time: in 1987 he announced he was HIV-positive and in the subsequent years received care from partners and close friends. He died in 1988, at the age of 41, from complications related to AIDS. His legacy survives in his influence on dance music, in LGBT visibility, and in the memory of the nightclubs that shaped a generation.
