Edward of Woodstock, historically known as the Black Prince, was a central figure of 14th‑century English nobility and the heir of Edward III. Renowned for his military career, he played a leading role in the principal English victories of the opening phase of the Hundred Years’ War, notably at the battles of Crécy (1346) and Poitiers (1356), where he captured the King of France. His martial reputation and the systematic use of scorched‑earth tactics contributed to his prestige and to the fear he inspired among his enemies.

Beyond the campaigns in France, Edward commanded forces at Nájera (1367) on the Iberian Peninsula, but illness prevented him from consolidating the future kingship many had expected. He also held titles such as Duke of Cornwall and Earl of Chester, and served as Prince of Wales from 1343, a position that secured his political and financial role within the monarchy.

He married Joan of Kent and left a dynastic legacy in Richard II, his son who succeeded to the throne in 1377. His memory remains visible in Canterbury Cathedral, where his effigy, helmet and shield are preserved, and in the symbols associated with the Prince of Wales, such as the ostrich feathers.
