Theda Bara, born Theodosia Burr Goodman, was one of the leading actresses of American silent cinema and among the first recognizable figures of the star system. She became famous for her role in A Fool There Was (1915), which established her as the archetypal femme fatale — the “vamp” — an image that helped turn the term into popular usage. Between 1914 and 1926 she starred in more than forty films, many produced by William Fox, whose box-office success helped drive the growth of the Fox Film Corporation.
Her exotic persona was extensively exploited by publicity campaigns that fabricated origins and myths about her life to heighten public fascination. Although she attempted to broaden her range, the association with the predatory woman constrained her career once she lost studio support; after her contract with Fox ended her work declined, with sporadic screen appearances until she retired in 1926.
Much of her filmography was lost, especially in the 1937 Fox vault fire, which is why only a few complete works survive. She married director Charles Brabin in 1921 and lived between Hollywood and New York; she died in 1955. Her legacy endures in the pioneering image of the silent-screen sex symbol and in her influence on cinematic portrayals of the femme fatale.
