Theo van Doesburg, born Christian Emil Marie Küpper, was a central figure of Dutch avant-garde as a painter, writer, poet and architect, best known for founding and leading the De Stijl movement. His artistic career moved from an Impressionism influenced by Van Gogh toward an abstract, spiritualized language, motivated by readings of Kandinsky and by his dialogue with Piet Mondrian. In 1917 he founded the magazine De Stijl and began promoting neoplasticism and ideas about the primacy of line, color and geometric composition. Van Doesburg also worked in architecture, design and typography: he designed artists’ houses, took part in the decoration of the Aubette in Strasbourg and created a geometric alphabet — today revived digitally as Architype Van Doesburg. He collaborated with European artists such as El Lissitzky and Kurt Schwitters on international initiatives and produced children’s books with experimental typographies. Following aesthetic tensions with Mondrian, he developed Elementarism, which introduced the use of the diagonal as a means to energize composition. His literary practice and Dadaist language experiments, often under heteronyms, sought to deconstruct the meaning of words and promote a collective experience of reality. Van Doesburg’s legacy lies in the integration of art, architecture and typography and in the spread of modernist ideas across Europe.
