Thomas Francis Eagleton was a prominent American politician from Missouri who served in the U.S. Senate from 1969 to 1987. A lawyer by training, he held local and state offices — including prosecuting attorney and lieutenant governor — before entering the Senate, where he focused on foreign relations, defense, intelligence services, public health, education, and the environment. He played a key role in the passage of the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act and supported amendments that limited U.S. military involvement in Southeast Asia.
He gained national attention in 1972 when he was selected as the Democratic vice-presidential nominee on George McGovern’s ticket; his swift withdrawal after revelations about prior psychiatric treatment shaped the campaign and influenced public debate on mental health and political fitness. In the Senate he was also involved in ethical matters and was the target of blackmail attempts in 1980, episodes that resulted in criminal prosecutions of those responsible.
After leaving Congress, he returned to St. Louis as a prosecutor, professor, and legal consultant, remaining active in public causes such as stem cell research and local civic life. The author of books on politics, he left a legacy as a legislator and public figure who prompted discussion on mental health, environmental policy, and public accountability.
