Thomas Paine was an English writer, pamphleteer, and political activist who became a central figure in the Atlantic revolutions of the eighteenth century. Immigrating to the American colonies in 1774 with a letter from Benjamin Franklin, he became known for writings with wide popular reach, especially Common Sense (1776) and the series The American Crisis, which helped galvanize the movement for American independence. After the war he remained energetically engaged in intellectual and practical affairs, advocating social reforms and technical experiments such as iron-bridge projects.
In revolutionary France, Paine gained prominence with Rights of Man (1791), a defense of Enlightenment ideas and civil rights; he was elected to the National Convention but was imprisoned during the most radical phase of the Revolution. His work The Age of Reason (1793–94) cemented his reputation as a proponent of deism and a critic of religious institutions.
Beyond his political and philosophical influence, Paine contributed to debates on property and social welfare, notably in Agrarian Justice (1797), which introduced the idea of a guaranteed minimum income. Controversial in his lifetime, his influence is acknowledged both in the founding of the United States and in the liberal and republican debates in Europe of the period.
