Tim Buckley was an American musician whose career ranged from folk rock to experiments with psychedelia, jazz, the avant-garde, and funk. He rose to prominence in the late 1960s for his distinctive voice—capable of deep lows and provocative falsettos—and for collaborations with lyricist Larry Beckett and guitarist Lee Underwood, who shaped much of his sound. His commercial peak came with the album Happy Sad (1969), while the bold Starsailor (1970) established a cult status and introduced “Song to the Siren,” his best-known song. These works trace his evolution from accessible melodies to freer, more improvised structures, reflecting the era’s climate of musical experimentation. Coming up in the Los Angeles folk circuit and clubs of the American West, Buckley attracted early critical attention for his songwriting and arrangements, though he was not always embraced by mainstream audiences. He died young, at 28, leaving an influential legacy among later musicians and an expanded artistic memory through the work of his son, Jeff Buckley.
