Tim Holt, stage name of Charles John Holt III, was an American actor whose career crossed between prestige productions and popular B westerns. The son of actor Jack Holt, he debuted while still young and made his mark in juvenile roles before rising to prominence in films by acclaimed directors such as John Ford, Orson Welles and John Huston. He appeared in notable titles including Stagecoach (1939), The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948).
During the 1940s he established himself as the leading man in a series of RKO westerns, making low‑budget but well-made pictures and maintaining strong public popularity. At the same time he served as a lieutenant in the Air Force during World War II, taking part in missions in the Pacific before resuming his film career.
In later years he alternated between film, television and work outside Hollywood, moving to a ranch in Oklahoma and working as an executive and radio professional. Recognized for balancing an aptitude for popular entertainment with dramatic ability, he left a legacy as a versatile performer who moved between cult and mass culture.
