Tjalling Charles Koopmans was a Dutch economist whose background in mathematics and physics guided fundamental contributions to mathematical economics, econometrics, and the theory of resource allocation. After earning his doctorate in 1936, he moved to the United States in 1940 and joined research bodies focused on transport economics and, later, the Cowles Commission, where he led work on optimal routing, productive efficiency and activity analysis.

His research combined rigorous mathematical tools with economic analysis; studies such as his 1942 paper on serial correlation influenced later statistical methods and the development of econometric tests. Koopmans also investigated problems of economic growth and production theory, collaborating with figures like Gérard Debreu on optimization questions and quasiconvex functions.

For his achievements in the theory of efficient resource use and the analysis of productive activity, he received the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel in 1975, jointly with Leonid Kantorovich. His legacy endures at the interface of mathematics and economics, affecting allocation theory, econometrics and applications in planning and optimization.
