Toby Keith was an American singer, songwriter, record producer, actor, and entrepreneur recognized as one of the most popular voices in country music during the 1990s and 2000s. He debuted in 1993 with the hit “Should've Been a Cowboy,” which established his career and set the stage for a string of gold- and platinum-certified albums. Over the course of his career he released 19 studio albums and sold more than 40 million records worldwide.
His repertoire includes emblematic hits such as “How Do You Like Me Now?!,” the title track that raised his profile further in the late 1990s, as well as enduring songs like “Beer for My Horses” (a duet with Willie Nelson) and “As Good as I Once Was.” Twenty of his singles reached number one on the country charts, and he placed a total of 61 entries on Hot Country Songs.
Beyond his musical career, he founded the label Show Dog Nashville (later Show Dog-Universal Music) in 2005 and appeared in films inspired by his songs. He received significant recognition, including Grammy nominations and the National Medal of Arts. He died in February 2024; hours after his death he was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame.
