Tom Brokaw is an American journalist and author, known for his long television career and for holding prominent positions in U.S. broadcast journalism. He became a central figure at NBC, where he served as White House correspondent, co-hosted Today (1976–1981) and—most notably—was anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News for 22 years (1982–2004). He was also one of the few journalists to present the network’s main news programs. Over several decades, Brokaw covered major historical events, including the Watergate scandal, the Challenger disaster, the Loma Prieta earthquake, Hurricane Andrew and the fall of the Berlin Wall—being the first English-language journalist to report that event live. He conducted exclusive interviews with leaders such as Mikhail Gorbachev and Vladimir Putin. In addition to his work as an anchor, he has written books on American society and 20th-century history, most notably The Greatest Generation (1998). He received multiple honors, including two Peabody Awards, two Emmys, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the French Legion of Honour. His career secured him a prominent place in the history of American television journalism.
