Tommaso Buscetta was one of the best-known members of the Sicilian Cosa Nostra who, in the second half of the twentieth century, broke the code of silence by becoming an informant. Active in criminal enterprises in Italy, the United States and Brazil, he held a prominent position in the Mafia hierarchy and took part in smuggling and trafficking operations before being arrested and extradited. After the violent deaths of several relatives during an internal war between Mafia families, Buscetta decided to cooperate with the authorities in 1984. His collaboration with Judge Giovanni Falcone revealed the organizational structure of the Sicilian Mafia, its initiation rituals and the existence of the Commission — knowledge that had until then been mysterious to officials — a contribution known as the “Buscetta theorem.” His testimonies were decisive in the Maxi Trial of 1986–87, which resulted in hundreds of indictments and convictions of mafiosi, and later helped expose links between the Cosa Nostra and Italian political figures. Placed in a witness protection program in the United States, he lived under a new identity until his death in 2000. Buscetta’s legacy is ambivalent: on one hand he made unprecedented legal and investigative advances against organized crime possible; on the other, his life illustrates the transnational ties and internal violence that marked the history of the Sicilian Mafia.
