Tove Jansson was a Finnish-Swedish writer, painter, and illustrator best known for creating the children’s series the Moomins, begun in 1945. Trained in the arts in Helsinki, Stockholm, and Paris, she worked from a young age as an illustrator for magazines, book covers, and public commissions, and from 1943 held solo painting exhibitions.
The Moomin books — including The Moomins and the Great Flood, Comet in Moominland, and Finn Family Moomintroll — established her international reputation and spawned adaptations for theatre, film, and opera. At the same time, Jansson illustrated classics such as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and The Hobbit and executed murals for public buildings between 1945 and 1984.
From 1968 she also turned to adult literature, publishing novels and short-story collections such as Sommarboken. Honors recognizing her contribution to children’s literature include the Hans Christian Andersen Medal (1966) and the Selma Lagerlöf Prize (1992). Her legacy endures in the cultural influence of the Moomins and the continued presence of her illustrations and texts in the Finnish literary canon.
