Trinh Xuan Thuan is a Vietnamese-American astrophysicist and an author noted for communicating science in French. Educated at Caltech and holding a PhD in astrophysics from Princeton, he served on the astronomy faculty at the University of Virginia, where he conducted research on galactic evolution and primordial nucleosynthesis. He is an expert in extragalactic astronomy, with influential work on compact blue dwarf galaxies and on the primordial abundances of helium and other light elements.
Alongside his scientific career, Trinh Xuan Thuan has written numerous popular works that link cosmology, philosophy, and Eastern traditions; his books address topics such as the anthropic principle and the relationship between science and Buddhism. His writing and lectures have earned him several international awards, including UNESCO’s Kalinga Prize (2009), the Cino Del Duca Prize (2012), and the Grand Prix de la Francophonie from the Académie Française (2022).
Among his observational contributions, he helped identify the galaxy I Zwicky 18 as one of the youngest known and has used major ground- and space-based telescopes in his research. Recognized both for his scientific output—about four hundred papers—and for his popularization efforts, he has left a legacy of bringing science closer to the general public.
