Valerie Harper was an American actress whose career moved from Broadway to television stardom in the 1960s and 1970s. She began as a dancer in musicals and joined improvisational companies, which paved her way into television and film. She became widely known for the role of Rhoda Morgenstern on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, a character that earned her multiple Emmy Awards and led to the spin‑off Rhoda, in which she starred.
Beyond television, Harper appeared in films such as Freebie and the Bean and Chapter Two, receiving Golden Globe nominations. She returned frequently to the theater later in her career, notably on Broadway, and was nominated for a Tony for her portrayal of Tallulah Bankhead in Looped. She also worked in subsequent television productions and in stage plays such as Golda's Balcony.
Her career also included union involvement, serving on the Screen Actors Guild board and running for its presidency in 2001. Harper left a legacy by creating a memorable television character that influenced the portrayal of women in American television comedy.
