Maria Luisa Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld was a German princess whose life linked the court of Coburg with the British royal family. Widowed from the Prince of Leiningen, she served as regent of the principality after her husband's death, playing a local political role during her son's minority. In 1818 she married Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, and gave birth to Alexandrina Victoria, the future queen of the United Kingdom.
As the mother of Queen Victoria, her life entered the public eye amid the complex dynamics of British succession. She settled in Kensington to raise her daughter and relied on the influence of the secretary John Conroy, whose actions provoked tensions with other royals and strained her relationships with King William IV and with Victoria during part of the princess’s youth.
After the Duke of Kent's death she maintained close ties with her adult daughter; her financial position and influence were eventually secured with the support of the monarch and her circle. She died in 1861 and was buried at Frogmore, leaving a broad dynastic legacy: she is the matrilineal ancestor of several branches of European royal houses.
