Virginia E. Johnson was an American sexologist and, together with William H. Masters, cofounder of the research team that transformed the scientific study of human sexuality. Without formal medical training at the outset, she worked as a research assistant beginning in 1957 and became a central figure in the direct observation and measurement of sexual responses, helping define the four phases of the sexual response cycle: excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution. Johnson and Masters developed physiological instruments to record sexual arousal and conducted experimental studies involving hundreds of participants, establishing then‑novel methods and protocols for diagnosing and treating sexual dysfunctions. In 1964 they founded an independent research institution on reproduction, later known as the Masters and Johnson Institute, where Johnson held administrative and clinical roles. Over the following decades, her work sparked intense ethical and social debate, influencing clinical sexology, sex therapy, and public perceptions of sexuality. Her career also drew cultural attention and inspired dramatic adaptations that increased recognition of her scientific legacy.
