Vladimir Samoylovych Horowitz was a Russian-American pianist. He is considered one of the greatest pianists of all time, due to his exceptional technique combined with his captivating performances. He stood out for his unequalled touch, his exceptional dynamic control and his unique mechanics. His best-known and often regarded as unmatched interpretations span works by the Baroque composer Domenico Scarlatti, the Romantic composers Chopin, Schumann and Liszt, and the modern composer Prokofiev.
In 1925, he was granted permission to leave Russia under the pretext of studying with the Austrian pianist Artur Schnabel. But he had already decided not to return.
On 18 December 1925, he gave his first performance outside his country, in Berlin. He was selected by the Soviet government to represent Ukraine at the International Frédéric Chopin Piano Competition in 1927, but, having already decided to remain in the West, he did not take part in the competition. He played in Paris, London and, finally, New York City, on 12 January 1928 at Carnegie Hall. He became an American citizen in 1945.
