Walther Nernst was a German physical chemist whose work shaped thermodynamics, electrochemistry and solid‑state physics. He is best remembered for formulating the Nernst heat theorem, which paved the way for the third law of thermodynamics and earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1920. His 1887 Nernst equation became a fundamental tool for understanding electrochemical potentials and is widely used in cellular physiology and neurobiology.
Beyond theoretical contributions, Nernst achieved practical advances: he invented the solid‑state heater known as the Nernst glower, important in infrared spectroscopy. He published the influential manual Theoretical Chemistry and carried out studies on electrical conductivity, osmotic pressure and nerve conduction. His investigations of specific heats at low temperatures anticipated aspects of quantum physics and led him to collaborate with and support figures such as Albert Einstein and Max Planck.
Active outside the laboratory as well, Nernst took part in institutional scientific initiatives and in applied research efforts during World War I. His legacy endures in both fundamental laws and equations and in devices and institutions that influenced the practice of chemistry and physics in the twentieth century.
