Willem Johan “Pim” Kolff was a Dutch physician and inventor whose work laid the foundations for hemodialysis and artificial organs. Trained in Leiden with a doctorate from the University of Groningen, he devoted much of his career to developing techniques to replace kidney function, even building during World War II the first functional prototype of an artificial kidney from improvised materials. His innovation turned an experimental procedure into a viable therapy: in 1945 he saved the first patient by means of hemodialysis, a milestone that opened the way to treatment for people with acute and chronic renal failure. After the war, Kolff spread his machines and knowledge to hospitals across Europe and the United States and, in 1950, emigrated to the U.S., where he continued to refine medical devices. He worked on the development of lung and heart machines and led the artificial organs division at the University of Utah, where he was involved in the project for the first artificial heart implanted in a human. Internationally recognized, he received numerous honors and awards for his contributions to medicine. His career is regarded as pioneering in the field of biomedical devices, influencing generations of researchers and establishing techniques that have saved millions of lives.
